Kuradisild
Illustratsioon: Sild umbes 1860. aastal
Autor: Louis Höflinger (Eesti Rahva Muuseum).

Praegune sild on siin juba kolmas. Esimene, neogooti stiilis puitsild rajati 1809. aastal Tartu Ülikooli arhitekti Johann Wilhelm Krause projekti alusel. Järgmine puitsild valmis 1844. aastal. Tänapäevase betoonsilla projekteeris Tartu linnaarhitekt Arved Eichhorn ja see avati 1913. aastal Romanovite dünastia 300. aastapäevaks.
Kuradisild on pühendatud Vene keisrile Aleksander I-le, kelle bareljeef kaunistab silla üht külge. Nii Kuradisillal kui ka Inglisillal on lisaks Toomemäe küngaste ühendamisele sümboolne eesmärk rõhutada Vene impeeriumi ja keisri olulisust Tartu Ülikooli taasavamisel.
Kuradisilla nime kohta on teada mitu lugu.

Devil’s Bridge
The bridge in c. 1860
Author: Louis Höflinger (Estonian National Museum)
The current bridge is the third one in this location. The first one, a wooden bridge in neo-Gothic
style, was built in 1809 based on the design by Johann Wilhelm Krause, the architect of the
University of Tartu. The next wooden bridge was completed in 1844. The current concrete bridge
was designed by Tartu city architect Arved Eichhorn and was opened in 1913 to commemorate the
300 th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.
The Devil’s Bridge was dedicated to the Russian Emperor Alexander I, whose bas-relief adorns one
side of the bridge. In addition to connecting the hills of Toome, Devil’s Bridge and Angel’s Bridge
have the symbolic purpose of highlighting the importance of the Russian Empire and the Emperor in
reopening the University of Tartu.
There are several legends about how Devil’s Bridge got its name. Usually, the dark colour of the
bridge is given as the reason, as it contrasts with the lighter shades of Angel’s Bridge. The name has
also been associated with the head of the bridge construction, the famous surgeon Werner Zoege
von Manteuffel – Teufel means devil in German.
