Von Bocki maja (Ülikooli 16) ja Lai 30

1800. aasta juulis üüris ülikooli taasavamist ette valmistanud kuratoorium ruumid kreisisekretär C. L. Schultzile kuuluvas majas Lai 30. Samasse majja paigutati ka krahvinna Maria Aurora Lestocqilt saadud raamatuannetus (üle 350 köite), millega pandi alus ülikooli raamatukogu kogudele.

Keiser Paul I 1800. aasta detsembri ukaasiga viidi ülikool koos raamatukoguga Miitavisse (Jelgavasse). Keiser Aleksander I 12. aprilli 1801. aasta ukaasiga sai ülikooli asupaigaks taas Tartu. Ülikooli Tartusse tagasi toomisel paigutati raamatukogu (umbes 4000 köidet) riiginõunik Magnus Johann von Bockilt renditud maja (praegune Ülikooli 16) teisele korrusele. Siin alustas raamatukogu 23. (vkj 11.) juunil 1802 lugejate teenindamist. Nii peetaksegi 23. juunit raamatukogu asutamise ajaks.

1806. aasta kevadel kolis raamatukogu von Bocki majast Toomele, endise toomkiriku kooriossa, ülikooli arhitekti Johann Wilhelm Krause kavandi järgi ümber ehitatud hoonesse, mis jäi raamatukogu koduks 1981. aastani.

Von Bock house (Ülikooli 16) and Lai 30

In July 1800, the board of trustees preparing for the reopening of the university rented rooms in the house at Lai 30, which belonged to Tartu district secretary C. L. Schultz. Also the donation of books (more than 350 volumes) received from Countess Maria Aurora Lestocq was placed in the building – this became the foundation of the university library collections.

Under the ukase issued by Emperor Paul I of Russia in December 1800, the university together with the library was moved to Mitau (Jelgava). According to the ukase issued by Emperor Alexander I on 12 April 1801, the university’s location was Tartu again. When the university was returned to Tartu, the library (about 4,000 volumes) was placed on the second floor of the house rented from state councillor Magnus Johann von Bock (currently Ülikooli 16). Here, the library started servicing the readers on 23 June (11 June according to Julian calendar). Thus, 23 June is regarded as the date of founding the library.

In the spring of 1806, the library moved from von Bock’s house to Toome Hill, into the choir of the former cathedral reconstructed according to the design plans of the university’s architect Johann Wilhelm Krause. That building remained the library’s home until 1981.
