Geoloogiline profiil Kassitoomel

Kassitoome org on tekkinud Toomemäe veerde seepärast, et linnakodanikud võtsid keskajast alates siit liiva ja savi. Kui ülikool 1802. aastal taasavati, sai Toomemägi ja ka Kassitoome ülikooli omandiks ning algas pargialade kujundamine. Kassitoome kujunes pargi osaks 19. sajandi teisel poolel. 1874. aastal tegi geoloogiaprofessor Constantin Grewingk ettepaneku kujundada Kassitoomele Vana-Liivimaa kivimikihtidest tehislik geoloogiline profiil, mis oleks ühelt poolt näitlik õppevahend ja teisalt huviväärsus.

Aja möödudes geoloogiline profiil lagunes ja 20. sajandil sellest enam teateid pole. Teadaolevalt on sellest säilinud vaid kaks fotot.

Geological profile at Kassitoome

The valley of Kassitoome was formed at the edge of Toome Hill because this is where townspeople had taken sand and clay since the Middle Ages. In 1802, Toome Hill and also Kassitoome became the property of the newly reopened university, and the landscaping of the park areas began. Kassitoome became part of the park in the second half of the 19^th century. In 1874, Professor of Geology Constantin Grewingk proposed to create an artificial geological profile of Old Livonian rock strata at Kassitoome, both as an educational tool and a sight to visit.

Over the years, the geological profile crumbled, and there is no record of it from the 20^th century. Only two photos of the profile are known to survive.
