Eesti Biokeskuse esimene asukoht

1986. aastal loodi biotehnoloogia arendamiseks Eesti NSV-s Eesti Biokeskus, millel on olnud kandev roll Eesti molekulaarbioloogia ajaloos. Sellised uurimisasutused moodustati mitmesse toonasesse nõukogude vabariiki.

Biokeskuse administratsiooni esimesed tööruumid paiknesid just siin, tähetorni juures asuvas majas, teisel korrusel (esimesel korrusel olid elukorterid). Teises krundil asuvas väikses hoones asus biokeskuse raamatukogu.

First location of Estonian Biocentre

The Estonian Biocentre, founded in 1986 for the development of biotechnology in the Estonian SSR, has played a pivotal role in the history of Estonian molecular biology. Similar research institutions were set up in several of the then Soviet republics. When the centre was established, funds were also allocated for staff recruitment and new equipment.

Professor Richard Villems was the director of the Biocentre from 1986 to 2014, and Mait Metspalu from 2014 to 2017. The very first offices of the Biocentre’s administration were here in this building next to the observatory, on the upper floor (the ground floor was residential). The other small building on the property housed the library of the Biocentre. There were no laboratories on Toome Hill, as the staff worked part-time in various units of the university or the National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics in Tallinn.

In 1997, the Estonian Biocentre moved to Riia 23b/1, the building erected with private funding behind the house of the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (Riia 23). It was the first building designed for scientific research in Estonia after the restoration of independence. The room situation of the Estonian Biocentre improved considerably.

From then on, the Biocentre’s activities were closely linked to the university’s Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), with whom they shared the building complex, research equipment and, to some extent, also staff, and supervised degree students. While IMCB mostly carried out the teaching, research was conducted by both the Biocentre and the institute. The Biocentre carried out internationally recognised high-level research in the fields of genetic and cell technology, biology, biomedicine and biotechnology.

In the 1990s, Estonian Biocentre was an independent research and development institution managed by the Ministry of Education and Research. In 2018, it was merged with the University of Tartu. Now, the Estonian Biocentre is a unit of the Institute of Genomics and continues its activities in the international league of excellence.
