Inglisild
Pildiallkiri: Inglisild 1837. aastal
Autor: Woldemar Friedrich Krüger (Tartu Ülikooli raamatukogu).
Esimene sild rajati sellele kohale 1816. aastal Johann Wilhelm Krause projekti alusel. 1836. aastal anti ehituskunsti professori Moritz Hermann von Jacobi kavandi põhjal sillale tänapäevane kuju. Sild on värvitud kollastes toonides, mida kavandi autor nimetas seletuskirjas rahu ja soojuse väljendajaks.
Rahvasuus levib jutt, et silla nimi tuli ideest rajada Toomemäele Inglise stiilis park. Teise pärimuse järgi on ajendiks olnud inglilokkidega rektori Georg Friedrich Parroti bareljeef, mis kaunistab silda 1913. aastast. Silla teisel küljel asub ladinakeelne tekst Otium reficit vires (’Puhkus taastab jõu’).
Ühe uskumuse kohaselt on sillal vägi viia täide soove, kui ületada see ühe hingetõmbega.

Angel’s Bridge
Angel’s Bridge in 1837
Author: Woldemar Friedrich Krüger (University of Tartu Library)
The first bridge designed by Johann Wilhelm Krause was built in this place in 1816. In 1836, the
bridge got its current appearance based on the design by Moritz Hermann von Jacob, a professor of
architecture. The bridge was painted in yellow tones, which the designer described in his
explanatory notes as an expression of peace and warmth.
The bridge’s name is said to have come from the idea of creating an English-style park on Toome Hill.
According to another legend, the name was inspired by the angel-like locks of Rector Georg Friedrich
Parrot on the bas-relief, which has adorned the bridge since 1913. On the other side of the bridge is
the Latin inscription Otium reficit vires (‘Rest restores strength’).
One belief says that the bridge can make wishes come true if you cross it in a single breath.
