Ajalooliselt on see üks ülikooli vanimaid ehitisi, kus on aegade jooksul asunud väga palju
ülikooli allasutusi. 19. sajandil oli siin näiteks rektori ametikorter ja ülikooli polikliinik.
Pärast psühholoogia eriala avamist 1968. aastal toimusid siin mitu aastat psühholoogia
loengud, seminarid ja praktikumid. Tol ajal hüüti seda õppehoonet Karl Marxi järgi Marksu
majaks, kuna teisel korrusel olid Nõukogude Liidu Kommunistliku Partei ajaloo, teadusliku
kommunismi ja poliitökonoomia kateeder.
Maja alumisel korrusel oli mõni ruum ka psühholoogia kateedrile – paar pisikest katseruumi,
õppejõudude ruum ja kaks auditooriumi. Üks auditooriumidest oli läbikäidav, nii et hilinejad, kes
pidid tagumisse ruumi loengusse minema, pidid läbi astuma ka eesmises ruumis olevast
loengust. Ruumide vähesuse tõttu toimus psühholoogide õppetöö paaril aastal kahes vahetuses
– nooremad kursused said vahel alles õhtul kella kümneks koju.
Praegu asub siin Tartu Ülikooli kultuuriteaduste instituut.

It is historically one of the oldest university buildings and has housed several university units
over the centuries. For example, it was the rector’s official residence and the university’s
polyclinic in the 19th century.
After the curriculum of psychology was opened in 1968, psychology lectures, seminars and
practical classes were held here for several years. At that time, the building was called “the
Marx building” after Karl Marx as the chairs of the history of the communist party of the
Soviet Union, scientific communism, and political economy were on the upstairs floor of the
building.
Downstairs, the chair of psychology also had a few rooms – a couple of small lab rooms, a
lecturers’ room and two lecture halls. One was a pass-through lecture room, so latecomers
whose lecture was in the back room had to go through the front room. Due to the lack of
space, the psychologists’ studies were held in two shifts for a couple of years – students of
the first years sometimes got home at ten in the evening.
Today, the building is the home of the University of Tartu Institute of Cultural Research.
