Selles 20. sajandi alguses ehitatud elumajas asus teise maailmasõja järel lisaks Näituse 7 majale veel üks ülikooli esimesi ühiselamuid. Ülikool sai maja Tartu linnalt 1945. aastal ja siia majutati valdavalt naisüliõpilasi. Kokku elas selles suurte korteritega endises üürimajas 150 tudengit, kelle koduks oli see 1950. aastate lõpuni. Praegu asub siin kortermaja.
Matemaatikaüliõpilane Maimo Ross meenutab:
„Üüri tuli meil tasuda viisteist rubla kuus, millele lisandus veel kaks rubla tee eest nn. teemammile ja papile. See kõrges eas abielupaar keetis meile kaks korda päevas suure pesuköögikatlatäie teed pohlavartest, mida nad olid ise metsast korjanud. Teevett lubati kasutada ainult joogiks. Aga juhtus sedagi, et mõni tüdruk pesi teeveega pead või sokke sooja vee puudumise tõttu. Hilisõhtuti tõusis sellest kärarikast nurisemist, sest viimasena internaatijõudjatele ei jätkunud enam teed.“

Kastani 12 apartment block

In addition to the building at Näituse 7, this building, which was constructed in the early 20th century, was one of the university’s first student residences after the Second World War. The City of Tartu granted the building to the university in 1945. At the time, it mostly housed female students. A total of 150 students lived in the former apartment block with its large lofts. It was their home until the end of the 1950s. Currently, it is an apartment block.
Mathematics student Maimo Ross says, “The rent was 15 roubles a month. On top of that, we paid two roubles for tea to the so-called “tea mother” and “tea father”. Twice a day, this elderly couple made us a huge pot of tea from lingonberries they had collected in the forest. The tea water was only meant for drinking. But some girls washed their hair or socks in it because there was no hot water. It caused quite the stir at night because those arriving home late wouldn’t get any tea.”
