Näituse 7 korterelamu

Näituse 7 elumaja ehitati 1930. aastatel ja sellest sai koos Kastani 12 majaga teise maailmasõja järel üks esimesi ülikooli ühiselamuid. 1944. aasta lõpus anti maja ülikoolile ja 1945. aasta alguses asusid siia elama esimesed üliõpilased, eeskätt noormehed. Ühiselamu tegutses siin kuni 1950. aastate lõpuni. Hiljem on hoones olnud ka ülikooli profülaktoorium ehk üliõpilastele mõeldud raviasutus. Praegu on maja esimesel korrusel kaubanduspinnad ja järgmisel kahel korrusel korterid.
Teise maailmasõja Punaarmee veteran ja Eesti ajakirjandusõppe rajajaid Juhan Peegel meenutab:
„Endine Näituse inter oli eliitühiselamu: parim, mis ülikoolil tollal oli. Siin elasid endised soldatid, komsomoliaktivistid ja muud eesrindlased. Ma ei mäleta, et meie elu-olu oleks sageli kontrollitud, sest egas tollal poisid väga mürtsu teinudki. Igatahes joomist oli küll hoopiski vähe, kuigi vanadelt rindemeestelt võis ehk just seda oodata. Ei. Polnud ju eriti rahagi, aga peaasi – polnud aega ega tahtmistki. Tõsi küll, mõni naps mõnel sünnipäeval ju võeti, aga skandaale polnud iialgi.“

Näituse 7 apartment block

The Näituse 7 building was constructed in the 1930s. After the Second World War, it became one of the university’s first student residences, along with the building at Kastani 12. The building was granted to the university at the end of 1944. The first students, mostly young men, moved in at the start of 1945. It continued to operate as student housing until the end of the 1950s. Later, the building also housed a medical centre for the students. Currently, the ground floor has commercial spaces, and the next two floors up have apartments.
Juhan Peegel, a Second World War veteran of the Red Army and one of the founders of Estonia’s journalism studies, says,
“The Näituse student housing was an elite residence. It was the best the university had at the time. Soldiers, Komsomol activists and other notable people lived there. I don’t remember anyone checking on us in our day-to-day lives. At the time, the boys didn’t cause anyone much hassle. There wasn’t much drinking, even though you might expect that of old army men. But no. There wasn’t enough money. And besides, there wasn’t enough time or even desire to drink. True, a drink or two was had on birthdays, but it never resulted in any sort of scandal.”
